With the Omicron variant now spreading in England and the UK, prime minister Boris Johnson held a briefing on Wednesday to reveal tougher measures would be brought into place. The move has been met with a mixed reception following reports Downing Street held its own Christmas party amid restrictions last year, something Mr Johnson has denied. Trying to make light of the situation and insisting the measures won’t affect her own shows, however, Jane McDonald couldn’t resist a cheeky swipe at the PM during an interview on BBC’s The One Show after the announcement.
Jane joined Ronan Keating and Michelle Ackerley in The One Show studio at the later time of 7:30pm on Wednesday after Mr Johnson’s briefing delayed the show by 30 minutes.
And reacting to the news which will see vaccination passports, stricter mask-wearing and working from home guidance come into place, Jane admitted her own Christmas gigs will still be going ahead.
Introducing Jane to the show, Ronan began their discussion: “Welcome back to the studio.
“Now, it was a year ago you were here last, who’d have thought that we’d still be in the same situation a year later?”
Ronan went on: “I was at the Gary Barlow concert last night in Nottingham, lots of people wearing masks in the audience, do you think many people are already prepared for this news? What do you think?”
Jane candidly replied: “I think everybody is just desperate to get out again and we’ve been told that we can go out.
“I was really worried about – I’m so pleased that I’m the first person after the news to say, ‘We are going ahead!’ And we are going ahead.
“I’m going to be doing the concert on the 19th of December at Leeds Arena and it’ll be the best Christmas party you’ve ever seen,” she defiantly said.
Jane then spotted the perfect chance to take aim at Boris over the reports of a Downing Street Christmas party.
“It’ll be much better than Boris’, I’ll tell you that much,” she quipped.
Michelle and Ronan shared a laugh but Jane wasn’t done there.
The singer continued: “It certainly will, it certainly will – there’ll be no cheese and wine but it’ll be a right good ol’ night!”

“Sounds fantastic,” Michelle replied before the trio moved on with the rest of the evening’s show.
Jane also discussed her upcoming Channel 5 series in which she’ll explore her home county of Yorkshire.
And it wasn’t just Ronan and Michelle who loved having Jane in the studio.
Fans quickly took to Twitter to share their delight at seeing Jane on screens and hear about her plans for a festive gig.
