Jeremy Vine open-mouthed as livid caller tells him to 'take a pay cut' after farming row turns personal

JEREMY Vine was shocked when an angry viewer called in to give him an earful and suggested he take a wage cut.

The TV host had opened up the phone lines after discussing dairy farmers' calls to increase the price of milk as they face a rising cost in production.

Jeremy suggested they should "take the hit" as everyone in the UK is facing a sharp rise in the cost of living.

But Sally from Devon was not having any of Jeremy's argument and called to tell him so directly.

Sally defended a farmer who appeared via a video link on the show and got more enraged when Jeremy smirked during her call.

"It's the price of electrics gone up, the price of oil's gone up, the diesel," she started explaining about the costs facing farmers.

"He's [the farmer] not going to go ploughing up fields with a horse. you can plough an acre a day with a horse."

Jeremy tried to stop Sally who had started ranting a little bit, begging her to "wait."

He then put to her: "But we're saying, 'look, everyone's having to take a hit, shouldn't we say to the farmers please can you take a hit on milk?'"

"Because that's something we all need in our fridges."

But Sally was worked up and hit back with the suggestion that he take a pay cut instead.

"For years, Jeremy… if you took as much… you need to take a hit on how much money you take home, perhaps," she said.

Jeremy retorted: "How's that going to help somebody who hasn't got milk?"

Sally yelled: "Your cost goes up four times, perhaps you should take a four-time cut in your salary."

But Jeremy struggled to see her point: "But how does that help someone who hasn't got any milk?

"I mean… we're drifting here, Sally. I think that whole scene at the farmyard has thrown us."

The call was then cut off as viewers were divided about Sally's reaction.

"#JeremyVine – Caller Sally, you go girl. Tell it like it is. Yes, JV, take a cut in your numerous salaries," wrote one viewer on Twitter.

Another added: "Sally questions Vine about his salary so Sally gets cut off #jeremyvine."

And a third wrote: "Calm down, Sally. #jeremyvine."

The awkward incident comes after Jeremy was forced off air by a nightmare power cut this week- leaving fans furious.

Staff at ITN Productions were informed there had been a "significant power outage" at the building in Gray's Inn Road in London in an email at 8.30am.

However, things weren't fixed in time for Jeremy's usual 9.15am slot, and the show was replaced by repeats of Million Pound Home.

Jeremy, 56, wrote on Twitter: "Sorry to say, we didn’t make it to air today.

“Questions will be asked of the emergency generator, and the emergency backup generator.

“But nice to get some quality catch-up time with my esteemed co-presenter @StormHuntley.”
