As 2022 kicks off, we take our annual look back at movies set in the new year. As usual, there’s a lot of older science fiction imagining a dystopian or cyberpunk version of our present, some of which imagine the worst results of climate change. And as you scroll through you’ll also find out how 2022 is related to the third James Bond movie.

Soylent Green (1973)

The most famous movie set in 2022 is this 1973 classic starring Charlton Heston. The story follows the investigation into the murder of a wealthy businessman in a future of overpopulation, pollution, poverty and a climate crisis. Oh, and yes, the food supply Soylent Green turns out to be people!

The Purge (2013)

The first outing in the horror franchise takes place this year, with the American government having introduced an annual 12 hour period in which all crime is legal to curb lawlessness the rest of the time.

Geostorm (2017)

Gerard Butler stars in this disaster movie in which a network of satellites has been set up to control the global climate crisis, that is until the system build to protect the Earth starts attacking the planet itself.

The Tomorrow War (2021)

Last year’s Chris Pratt outing starts during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, with a group of time travellers from 2051 recruiting the past to fight humanity’s war in the future.

Time Runner (1993)

Star Wars legend Mark Hamill plays a space captain sent back in time to save Earth from alien invaders led by a US senator, making it sound somewhat similar to The Tomorrow War.

No Escape (1994)

Casino Royale and GoldenEye director Martin Campbell helmed a story set in a dystopian future where a former Reconnaissance Marine is serving life imprisonment on an island inhabited by cannibal prisoners.

Alien Intruder (1993)

Another Star Wars legend in Billy Dee Williams stars in a movie in which several convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are sent on a mission into uncharted space to salvage a lost ship. Sounds like a mash-up of Time Runner and No Escape.

Goldfinger (1964)

Sean Connery’s third James Bond movie obviously wasn’t set this year, but 2022 would have been the year that Fort Knox’s entire gold supply ceased being radioactive if Goldfinger’s plan had succeeded. The Bond villain told 007 in 1964: “58 [years] to be exact.”
