Outlander season six has been a long time coming, but information has slowly but surely been revealed about what to expect. With an impending early 2022 release for the Starz show, finally, some real details are being unveiled for fans. During last month’s New York Comic-Con, the stars of the series gave viewers some welcome plot teasers, with Jamie’s Sam Heughan going into some specific details.

Only recently did fans get their first proper look at season six, when Starz dropped the first trailer.

The trailer was intentionally vague, though it did establish the main players, locations, and of course, tone.

Front and centre once again was Jamie, now weathering the burden of protecting a town in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War.

This won’t be the only thing worrying Jamie, as season six is set to be the darkest chapter yet, based on Diana Gabaldon’s sixth novel, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

This book focused on newcomers into Fraser’s Ridge, and how betrayal and murder effects each and every member of the small community.

This will also involve Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe), who will be similarly caught in the middle of the conflict.

Speaking at NYCC 2021, Heughan explained: “I think, you know, Jamie and Claire have spent a lot of time building this community.

“I think this is the series where we really see that disintegrate.”

“Jamie went to save Claire but I think but she hasn’t gotten over that [season five] trauma.

“Jamie is very aware of it and he’s keeping an eye on her and these cracks are really starting to show, not only for them but for the rest of the inhabitants of Fraser’s Ridge.

“The war is coming, it always seems to be coming but it is and we’re very aware and Jamie’s having to tread a fine line between his loyalties.

“He knows he’s on the wrong side with the British and at some point, he’s going to have to switch sides.”

Finally, Heughan added: “It’s really hard for him because Jamie is being pulled in both directions.”

Looking back at the trailer, British Redcoats are seen coming into Fraser’s Ridge, threatening the stability of the town.

So far in the series, the town has been loyal to the British, though as Heughan teased, that may be about to change.

The specifics of the plot will likely alter from Gabaldon’s novel, as the show has made subtle but significant changes in the past.

Yet, the main overarching plot will remain the same, leading to some inevitably devastating conflicts in season six.

While a release date currently hasn’t been confirmed, a premiere window is expected to be announced soon.

Both seasons six and seven have been in development back-to-back, leading to a much shorter wait for season seven when compared to season six.

Outlander season 6 will premiere in early 2022 on Starz in the USA. A UK release date has not been confirmed.
