It’s been 17 years since Mel Gibson released his violent retelling of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. At the time The Passion of the Christ was a box office smash, making over $622 million worldwide while causing much controversy. A sequel focused on the Resurrection has been in the works for some years now and a tie-in book may have revealed when Passion of the Christ 2’s release date is.
Available for pre-order for publication in June 16, 2023, is a book called The Gospel According to Mel Gibson: Fact, faith and fantasy in The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.
The work will be written by The University of Edinburgh’s Professor Helen Bond who is an expert in Christian Origins and the New Testament.
Her previous books include subjects such as Pontius Pilate and most recently The Bible On TV.
A description of the new book from SPCK Publishing on the upcoming film reads: “A world expert on Jesus and the Gospels cuts through the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson’s new movie about the resurrection of Jesus and his journey through Hell.”
Considering the book is set for release in summer 2023, perhaps Passion of the Christ 2 will release then or is expected to?
Whatever the case, it’s not clear if the publication is officially part of the production or a work planning on commenting on the film. Express.co.uk have contacted Professor Bond for clarification.
The Gospel According to Mel Gibson was previously set to release in June 2022 but has been shifted back a year.
The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection is being written by Gibson’s Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace.

Speaking with Polygon last year, Randall said of Passion of the Christ 2: “It’s something we continue to discuss. We both consider that the Mount Everest of all stories.
“We continue to discuss it. We’re not ready to talk about it at all about what we’re planning to do.”
“I think we would rather do all of our homework before we start to make sense what we’re gonna do with it.”
Original Jesus star Jim Caviezel is set to reprise the role of the resurrected Christ and has said the sequel will be a “masterpiece”.

Speaking with Fox News in 2020, the devout Christian said: “It’s gonna be the biggest film in world history.
“I believe it will be based on what I feel in my heart. It’s so imperative in this time. These [biblical] films can’t be made now.
“The films they make are Marvel Comics movies. You’ll see Superman. You won’t see Jesus…I got to play the greatest superhero there ever was.”
Passion of the Christ: Resurrection’s release date is TBC.
