Princess Eugenie Once Revealed She Actually Hates Being Called 'Princess'

From Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to Kate Middleton and Prince William, there’s plenty of drama for the British royals nowadays. And while the spotlight typically isn’t on Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, we can’t forget that their parents made a huge splash back when the princesses were just little girls. Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew had a whirlwind romance that ended in serious scandal and divorce — and somehow, their royal daughters have managed to avoid major scandals of their own as they navigate adulthood.

Today, Princess Eugenie is married and loving life with her husband, Jack Brooksbank. But we can’t forget when she said she actually disliked her royal title of “princess” years ago. Here’s what was said.

Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice differ greatly from other royals

While Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are in attendance to most, if not all, of the major royal family events that take place, they’re still quite different than many of their family members. The princesses are not technically working royals. This means they do not perform work to support their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, even if they do attend events. For this reason, Express notes they don’t make any money from being royals, either, nor do they have 24-hour police protection.

It seems Prince Andrew has made serious efforts to keep his daughters on the royal payroll, but sadly, they’ve been booted. They don’t seem to mind too much, however. Good Housekeeping notes both Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice have jobs of their own that have nothing to do with their royalty. Princess Eugenie is a director of a London art gallery, and Princess Beatrice is the vice president of an American-based software company.

The Princesses have discussed how ‘regular’ they are in the past

Since the princesses both have fairly normal jobs and are typically out of the spotlight, they’ve expressed to the media before how normal their lives really are. “We want to show people who we are as working, young, royal women, but also not to be afraid of putting ourselves out there,” Princess Eugenie told Vogue during an interview where her sister was also present. And the younger York also added, “Nowadays, it’s so easy to recoil when you see a perfect image on Instagram – but it’s important that it’s real. We’re real.”

Unfortunately, it seems royal followers are unconvinced by how “real” the princesses really are. Express reports Russell Myers, the royal editor for The Daily Mirror, called the sisters “cringeworthy” on a podcast episode for Pod Save the Queen. Myers said, “The very fact that they are talking about the pressures of their personal lives, about being young independent women while being members of the Royal Family – it’s just a bit too much to stomach for some people, myself included.”

Princess Eugenie has also said she hates her royal title

Perhaps in an effort to prove she’s really just like the rest of us, Express notes Princess Eugenie has also put down her royal title in the past. During a 2008 interview with journalist Geordie Grieg, Princess Eugenie said, “How do I play the princess thing? I don’t really. I don’t like talking about it much and find it annoying when people say things like, ‘Oh, you’re the princess.’ One of my best friends jokingly says, ‘Hi, Princess,’ and I say, ‘Shut up.’” To seal the deal, Princess Eugenie added, “It is one of the things that bugs me most in the world.”

Princess Eugenie was just 18 at the time of the interview, of course, so we doubt she’d be so bold and candid today to say such things. And she and Princess Beatrice certainly know how privileged they’ve had it thus far in life. While Princess Eugenie may not love being referred to only as “the princess,” the perks of royalty, working or not, are certainly ones she enjoys.
