Renee Zellweger slammed for ‘fatphobic’ costume for new drama ‘Not cool at all’

The Bridget Jones’ actress has taken on the role of real-life murderer Pam Hupp in a new series titled, The Thing About Pam. Filming for the programme is currently taking place, although Renee has caused an uproar with fans after she was spotted on set wearing a fat suit.

n pictures obtained by, the actress was spotted wearing the fat suit under a pair of jeans and a puffer jacket.

She also wore her hair under a blonde bob as she got into the character of killer Pam.

After the pictures were released online, fans took to social media to share their frustration.

@Imbees penned: “And the reason they couldn’t find a more voluptuous actress is?”

Toni wrote: “Renee Zellweger unrecognisable in fat suit on set of Pam Hupp movie Meanwhile, non-skinny actresses get overlooked for non-stereotypical roles.” (sic)

While Ellie raged: “I don’t understand – why don’t they just get a fatter actress?”

“I’d be cool with it if she’d just gained the weight. A fat suit is not cool at all,” Jillian said.

Plus-size writer Sarah Alexander has also slammed the actress, claiming the fat suit “mocks fat people”.

She went on to point out other actresses who had previously worn a fat suit for a role – including Gwyneth Paltrow in Shallow Hal – regretted their choice in wearing one.

Speaking to, Sarah began: “There are plenty of incredibly talented plus-size actresses that could have been hired for the role instead of Zellweger.

“For Zellweger to masquerade as a plus-size person is damaging, fatphobic and potentially triggering to other plus-size people.”

She added: “It seems like she has not considered the effects this will have on fat people, and is unaware and/or naive that she is adding to the stigma fat people already face on a daily basis.”

The NBC series will see Renee play Pam Hupp, an American murderer who was sentenced to life in prison after killing a man in 2016.

Pam ended up shooting Louis Gumpenberger at her home in Missouri.

Louis had severe mental and physical impairments as a result of a car accident.

At the time, the killer claimed she shot the victim in self-defence.



Later it was revealed Louis was not Pam’s first murder.

In 2011, Pam murdered Betsy Faria. She stabbed her victim to death fifty-five times. 

Pam also attempted to frame Betsy’s husband Russ for his wife’s murder.

Speaking about the upcoming true-crime series, Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content told Deadline: has reached out to Renee Zellweger’s representative for comment.
