Richard Madeley missed daughter Chloe giving birth as he was presenting GMB

Good Morning Britain’s Richard Madeley has revealed he was live on air when daughter Chloe Madeley gave birth to her first baby.

Chloe, 35, and her husband James Haskell, 37, welcomed their daughter Bhodi in August and no one was more excited than Richard who had been anticipating the arrival for weeks, telling viewers that Chloe was "ready to pop".

Richard, 66, was back behind the GMB desk on Tuesday morning and explained to his co-host Susanna Reid what happened the day Bhodi was born.

He told her: "Well, on my very last day doing the show in the middle of August a couple of months ago, I couldn’t tell you at the time because my daughter didn’t want me say anything, but she was in labour.

Richard continued: "She was having the baby and the baby was actually born at 8:40am, while we were in the commercial break, which was very handy."

Although Richard was at work when Bodhi was born, he has spent a lot of time with his new granddaughter over the last few months.

He told Susanna: "Our house in London has been baby central, because Chloe, her husband and the baby have been living with us, because their house is being done up.

"So they’ve been living with us for three months, and I love it! You just go in and it’s like “baby, baby, baby everywhere."

Richard returned to GMB today after a lengthy break and explained that he'd been kept busy and "up to his eyeballs" since he last appeared on-screen.

He's been busy making sure he meets the deadline for his latest book and has been spending many days writing at home.

But after Richard explained his month-long absence from the ITV daytime show, viewers took to Twitter to react to his return and the mood was mixed.

One tweeted: "Such a disappointment that Richard Madeley is back on GMB. He adds no value. Switching over." Another wrote in capital letters, "RICHARD MADELEY ON GMB! GET OFF MY TV".

A third added to the complaints: "Why do they bring in Richard to host when Ranvir is just standing there? Such a waste of a presenter."

However, some fans were delighted to see Richard back on screen with one tweeting: "Great to see Richard back", with another adding: "Awh I love Richard and his little stories! Hope he stays forever".

A third added: "YAY Richard is back on GMB! Have missed him."

Richard's daughter Chloe Madeley had an emergency c-section and opened up about her big parenting fear on social media.

Chloe told fans on Instagram: "The thing I was most apprehensive about my whole pregnancy? It wasn’t the childbirth, which I was quietly certain would go to plan [laughing emoji].

“It wasn’t the fact we were moving house at 37 weeks. It was breastfeeding, which I was absolutely certain would fall apart for me in a matter of days, if not hours, like it did for so many friends and family members of mine.

“What I learned throughout my pregnancy, and what I’ve learned since in the postnatal period, is not to take your body personally (even though your visceral reaction will likely tell you to). Don’t do it.

“Don’t think that because you expect your body to do something, it will, and don’t think you should attach any kind of emotion to that whatsoever.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
