'Rock of Love With Bret Michaels': Here's What the Women Did When They Weren't Filming

Have you ever wondered what reality television stars do when they’re not filming? Rock of Love With Bret Michaels star Lacey Sculls (née Conner) spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet via Zoom about her time on the VH1 reality series and what went on behind the scenes when the cameras weren’t rolling.

In 2007, Bret Michaels was looking for love

During the early 2000s, VH1 experienced a lot of success with shows like The Surreal LifeStrange Love, and Flavor of Love. The network wanted to continue keeping fans entertained, so they introduced Rock of Love With Bret Michaels in 2007.

The premise of the show was similar to Flavor of Love. Rockstar Michaels lived in a mansion with 20-some women, each vying for his affection. Through a series of challenges, one-on-ones, and group dates, Michaels sent a different woman home each week until he found his final girl.

VH1 fans enjoyed these types of shows, but many wondered — what did the women get up to when the cameras weren’t filming their interactions with Michaels?

The women were constantly drinking behind the scenes of ‘Rock of Love With Bret Michaels’

Sculls might have been the Rock of Love Season 1 villain, but she’s celebrating her time on the reality series along with her co-stars on the podcast Talk of Love.

During our conversation, Sculls said she and the other women would do this when the cameras weren’t rolling: Drink alcohol, really.”

Drinking was one of the only things to do during down time on ‘Rock of Love’

Contrary to popular belief, filming a reality show consists of a lot of free time.

“When we weren’t doing challenges or we weren’t on a date with Bret, there was so much downtime,” Sculls revealed. Unfortunately, the type of activities the women could participate in was extremely limited.

“I remember I brought a bunch of magazines and books and the producer was like, ‘No, you can’t have those because they don’t want to film you reading a magazine or reading a book.’” Those activities aren’t exactly drama inducing.

As Sculls explained it, producers didn’t want the Rock of Love women doing anything that might isolate them from the other women. That included making personal phone calls, reading books or magazines, and hanging out in their bedroom all day.

“[The producers] want you to go engage,” Sculls explained. “They take away [books, magazines, etc.] so you’re forced to go engage with the other people in the house.”

Aside from drinking, these are the only things the ‘Rock of Love’ women could do in the mansion

Sculls said the other activities the women could participate in included swimming in the pool, doing their nails, or laying out.

“I’m not much of a lay-out-by-the-pool girl,” Sculls laughed. “You can you can tell by my clear, transparent skin tone.” Simply hanging out and chit-chatting was another popular activity amongst the women — which, most of the time, involved some alcohol.

As one of the final three women in the house, Sculls said she spent about a month filming the entire series. While that doesn’t seem like an excessive amount of time, Sculls admitted it felt like an eternity, especially with the restrictions on what they could and couldn’t do with their downtime.
