Saturday Night Live Writers Boycott Over Dave Chappelles Hosting Gig After Transphobic Jokes

A new report claims that some staff writers of the Emmy-winning sketch comedy show ‘are not going to do the show’ if the ‘Chappelle’s Show’ star hosts the November 12 episode.

AceShowbiz -“Saturday Night Live” staff are furious over the decision to sign up Dave Chappelle to host the show this weekend. If a new report is to be believed, some staff writers are boycotting the sketch comedy show after the stand-up comedian’s transphobic and homophobic jokes.

Page Six reported on Wednesday, November 9 that some writers of the show “are not going to do the show.” A source with direct knowledge went on adding that “none of the actors are boycotting.”

However, Dave’s representative told the outlet there’s “no evidence of a boycott” as they attended the Tuesday, November 8 meeting with writers and producers at 30 Rock. “The room was full of writers. They all pitched ideas and they seemed very excited about it…. Dave is looking to have some fun,” the spokesperson added.

Last week, “SNL” announced that Dave would host the Emmy-winning NBC show with musical guest Black Star on November 12. This will mark the “Chappelle’s Show” star’s third time as host.

Dave last hosted the sketch comedy show in 2020, well before Netflix released his controversial special “The Closer” in 2021. The comedy special angered some viewers because many of Dave’s jokes were aimed at the trans community.

Dave said in the comedy special, “Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact.” He went on to elaborate, “Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those p***ies that they got… you know what I mean? I’m not saying it’s not p***y, but it’s Beyond P***y or Impossible P***y. It tastes like p***y, but that’s not quite what it is, is it? That’s not blood. That’s beet juice.”

Shortly after “SNL” announced that Dave will host the November 12 episode, numerous social media critics turned to social media to express their disappointment. Former co-vice president of Netflix’s transgender employee resource group Terra Field tweeted, “Wait I thought I canceled him. Is it possible cancel culture isn’t a real thing.” Terra resigned from the streaming platform in November last year in protest over the comedy special.

One “SNL” fan added, “I love SNL. I’ve been a fan all my life. But having Dave Chappelle on as host is not the move. You have your first non-binary cast member ever and then you book and proud and open transphobe. What a disappointment.” Another loyal supporter echoed, “I’m a die hard SNL fan, but I’ll be taking a hard pass on this one.”
