Charlene White hosted Thursday’s edition of Loose Women and was joined by panellists Denise Welch, Carol McGiffin and Katie Piper. However, as the group discussed whether or not they minded hangovers, friends Denise and Carol clashed over the latter’s relationship with alcohol.

On the show, Denise celebrated her 10th year of sobriety while the rest of the panel discussed hangovers.

The actress explained she gave up alcohol when her husband Lincoln Townley decided to become sober.

She recalled: “My relationship with drink was very destructive and it’s the best thing that I’ve ever done.”

Carol replied: “I hope I never get like that because I love wine, I literally love wine. I don’t really like soft drinks. That’s the truth.”

“If you got as depressed and as down and destructive then you would stop,” Denise hit back. “I think you should drink less.”

“I know I drink too much,” Carol agreed. “The government says I should only drink like 14 units a week, so it is more than that.

“But I don’t get terrible hangovers, I don’t get depressed.”

Denise argued: “But it’s not just about hangovers – you have had breast cancer as well.

“I think that you should not drink as much because you’ve had that. I worry about it from a health point of view.”

“You’ve got to take chances in life,” Carol quipped and Denise replied: “I know you have, we all know that.”

Interrupting, Charlene warned: “Take a breath ladies, take a breath.”

When the ITV show returned after an advert break, the host revealed Denise and Carol had calmed down.

Earlier in the show, Denise recalled the moment she decided to give up alcohol for good.

She admitted she’d had too much to drink after performing in a play called Steel Magnolias.

At this point, Lincoln had been sober for two months and Denise had previously asked him to warn her if she was “getting a bit tipsy”.

“He said to me, ‘Darling, you are getting a bit tipsy, there are paps taking pictures through the window. I don’t want you to make a fool of yourself,’” Denise explained.

She told the panel she responded: “Don’t you tell me what to do.

“I woke up the next day having no recollection of the evening. I’d broken things in the flat, it was a disaster.”

“He said to me that night, ‘I’m just going to say, when we go out, if you have two glasses or more, I’m going to take myself away,’ and I just thought to myself, ‘I can’t let him live a life where he doesn’t know who’s going to come through the door at night,’ because I was in a relationship once and I didn’t know what person was coming through that door.

“I stopped that night and that was ten years ago. I haven’t touched a sherry trifle since.”

Loose Women airs on ITV on weekdays at 12.30pm.
