Spoilers: EastEnders star reveals Callum is involved in stunt in first episode
Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) has been at the centre of many an EastEnders storyline since he rocked up in Walford, and he’s set to be once more upon the soap’s return.
Last we saw Callum, he was training to become a police officer, and with lockdown having resulted in the soap having to take a hiatus, fans are curious as to what lies ahead for the young man in the future.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about what viewers can expect, actor Tony Clay said: ‘Callum has been fast tracked in the police, he’s full blown now in the mix, starting his new career. Naturally that causes its own issues down the line.
‘He is always trying to do the right thing but the heart wants what the heart wants. And then you have Ben and his dad – he couldn’t have picked any worse! Nah, I’m kidding!
‘You will see a new side of him – he is growing into himself and his new job and the adventures he will have.’
It’s not just Callum that’s having new adventures either, as actor Tony has had to adjust to a whole new way of filming as a result of social distancing measures with have been implemented on set.
However, he revealed that while this new way of filming comes with challenges, it also has its positives. He told us: ‘There’s always going to be moments where you want to step forward or be close to someone or hug someone and that gets taken away.
‘Actors can be very impulsive.”I’m going to grab him at this point! Actually no”. But two people in a room talking can be just as powerful.
Tony was also involved in something of a stunt, which suggests that Callum will have some challenges ahead in relation to his line of work.
He said: ‘That was weird, yeah! Outside the car lot! They brought two people in – I had to run through the Square and arrest someone.
‘A lot of running for me – I’m fit as a fiddle now. My steps are through the roof now. It was lovely to come back, we shot that in the first week – it was really like we’re doing what we were doing before. Business as usual.
‘It was lovely to know we can pick up and make a really brilliant TV show. That was a real eye opener.’
EastEnders returns Monday, September 7 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
