Strictly 2019: Katya Jones exposes Mike Bushell’s advantage in avoiding elimination
Katya Jones, 30, and Mike Bushell’s, 53, continuation on Strictly Come Dancing has caused some controversy amongst fans as they’ve managed to see off three couples from the show. Appearing on BBC spin-off programme It Takes Two this evening, the pair explained how they do manage to prevail against their competitors.
On Sunday night, it was Viscountess Emma Weymouth, 33, and her professional partner Aljaz Skorjanec, 29, who became the latest casualties of the series.
It was the judges who ultimately decided to keep Mike on the show, after the BBC Breakfast star had also beaten Catherine Tyldesley, 36, and David James, 49, in the dreaded dance off.
Bookmaker’s have had the sports reporter as the hot favourite to leave for some weeks now, but he continued to defy the odds.
As the pair reflected on their third risk of elimination, Katya told host Rylan Clark-Neal, 31, why she thought they were still in the competition.

After Mike expressed his delight about being able to perform the Charleston again, although it was in the dance off, his professional partner interjected.
Katya declared: “However, we’re still facing this problem of you doing the dance off better than the actual show.”
Believing his performances have been better second time around, the Russian dancer listened as the BBC Breakfast star admitted he never feels safe from elimination despite his track record.
“After two dance offs in a row, obviously the public vote for their favourites and that’s fantastic. You can never assume anything.”
You know it could be your very last dance
“I always start preparing for the dance off as soon as the Saturday night show’s over,” Mike declared.
Coming back to Katya’s comments about performing better in the dance off, Rylan said: “Where you have been in the dance off before, I suppose them nerves are slightly more eliminated and like you’ve just said Katya, you’re performing it better the second time around.”
The professional replied: “Because you know it could be your very last dance.”
Mike added: “And you get advice from the judges.”

“They say go into this dance off doing exactly the same, just don’t make any mistakes.
“So, that’s what I did.
“I don’t get as nervous as I do in the dance off as I do in the main show. It’s weird,” the BBC Breakfast star explained.
He continued: “You think this is my last chance to have a bit of fun on the Strictly dance floor. Just go for it.”

Latest odds from Coral bookmakers suggest this weekend could see the sports reporter’s luck run out.
Mike is currently at 1-2 to face the boot on Sunday night, as he and Katya prepare to take on the Paso Doble.
Coral spokesperson John Hill said: “Mike Bushell has had more lives than a cat during this series but our betting suggests he will be the unlucky contestant to miss out on the chance to perform at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Kevlin Fletcher, 35, still leads the charge to win the show at 8-11.
Strictly Come Dancing 2019 continues Saturday at 6.50pm on BBC One.
