'Teen Mom' Star Mackenzie McKee Shares Special Gift She Found From Her Mom Just Weeks After Her Death

Teen Mom OG star, Mackenzie McKee, is grieving the loss of her mother. The 25-year-old took a break from social media following her mother’s December 2019 death but has since returned and is focused on her fitness business and raising her family. The MTV star recently shared a photo of a touching note her mother left behind that she did not discover until after her mom’s passing.

Mackenzie McKee loses her mother to cancer battle

Teen Mom fans watched McKee struggle to come to terms with her mom’s cancer diagnosis. Her mother, Angie Douthit, was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer in January 2018. Douthit was open about her illness, sharing candid updates on her social media account as well as on the show.  A devout Christian, she also penned a book, God’s Plan, which she detailed her journey.

The diagnosis was rough from the beginning and doctors shared that her outcome may not be as she wished. Despite treatments, the cancer spread quickly.

“Scans showed results that were not good. The cancer has grown in the liver and in the brain. There is also some hemorrhaging in the brain,” she wrote on her Instagram account. “I will have two more doses of radiation and that will be the last treatment I will be given. I should be able to go home in the next few days. We have decided to have the hospice come in when I go home for some extra care.”

1 Corinthians 15:55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” Today was a little rough. Scans showed results that were not good. The cancer has grown in the liver and in the brain. There is also some hemorrhaging in the brain. I will have two more doses of radiation and that will be the last treatment I will be given. I should be able to go home in the next few days. We have decided to have hospice come in when I go home for some extra care. I haven’t been able to open my eyes all day and my head has been hurting badly. Kaylee has had to help me write this post. I’m not sure what to say… other than How God told me early in my diagnoses that He would heal me but I would have a long dark journey to take. I’m starting to think this is what He meant by long dark journey. So please pray for me that I will be strong and be able to stop vomiting. Also please pray that I will be a mighty warrior for Christ. I love every one of you. I thank you so much for your prayers. #alwaysbekind #staystrongmightywarrior #itsonlycancer

Hospice care is normally the final place a patient goes in order to rest comfortably before the inevitable. Douthit provided the hospice update just a week before her death.

The family shared that Douthit died on her Instagram account on Dec. 10 with a touching caption equipped with a Bible verse.

“On Monday, December 9 at 11:37pm, Angie finished her race,” the caption read in part with a photo of Douthit running in a marathon. “Her last days were spent lovingly surrounded by family and friends as they prayed, sang, and shared funny Angie stories.”

“Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭11:1‬ “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8 On Monday, December 9 at 11:37pm, Angie finished her race. Her last days were spent lovingly surrounded by family and friends as they prayed, sang, and shared funny Angie stories. Angie found out about her cancer in January 2018. She wanted to keep everyone informed of what was going on so she made a social media post. The next day she made another. And then another. And what started as an easy way to convey information turned into wildfire of hope that spread over the world. She wasn’t able to sleep an entire night so she would wake up around 3am to write her posts. We watched her get up everyday in the darkest hours of the night to spread the brightest light that she knew of, her Savior Jesus Christ. There were times when she wrote her posts through pain and confusion. There were times at the end when she couldn’t type and would ask her daughters to type for her but she would not give up spreading the gospel message of hope. In nearly two years, she never missed her daily post…tomorrow she will. But this is where you pick up the baton and run like she did mighty warrior. You can choose this day to be like Angie and use your social media engagements to make a difference rather than disaster, to spread love and not hate, and to always be kind. We know many people around the world read these posts so drop your city and country name in the comments so we can see where you are! #staystrongmightywarrior #itsonlycancer #alwaysbekind

Mackenzie McKee shares note her mother left her

McKee and her mother were extremely close. The reality star leaned on her mom when she became pregnant as a teenager and viewers watched as Douthit stood by her daughter through the struggles of motherhood and marriage.

McKee helped care for her mother during her illness. As her progression worsened, she got a tattoo on her forearm in her mother’s honor that read, “Always be kind.” She shared a photo of the tattoo as well as a candid shot of her and her mother on Dec. 6. The tattoo is in her mother’s handwriting.

McKee broke her silence on her mother’s death in a lengthy Instagram post on Jan. 21. She expressed that she opted to grieve in silence, away from the spotlight as she reconciled her new normal.

“I have avoided talking to anyone regarding where things stand since her passing, and have passed on opportunities for interviews regarding her,” she wrote. “I decided to give a one time tell all interview. I miss you daily momma, every day and strive to make you proud, both with what I’m sharing here and every day of my life. I miss and love you more than words can say.”

As you all know, I’ve gone through a lot lately. I have avoided talking to anyone regarding where things stand since her passing, and have passed on opportunities for interviews regarding her. But, I know that many of you want to know how we’re doing, how my Dad is doing, and how we’re honoring her memory on a daily basis. I also know many of you are curious about some things regarding her we may not have shared in the past, as well as where things stand with her book. I decided to give a one time tell all interview. I miss you daily momma, every day and strive to make you proud, both with what I’m sharing here and every day of my life. I miss and love you more than words can say. #alwaysbekind #linkinbio

McKee shared a link in her Instagram bio that led fans to the interview. Talking to Champion Daily, McKee revealed that she and her family have entrusted one another by spending time together to get through the difficult time. The family is tight-knit and live close to each other. McKee also said that she uses her Christian faith, as her mother would wish, to help her through the process.

As she continues to grieve, McKee got the surprise of a lifetime when she discovered a handwritten note from her mother while on a trip to New York recently. It was the first time she’d traveled to New York without her mom and was having a difficult time without her until she found the letter.

“I opened my suit case after arriving and who knows how this wallet got here but it did. Mom, you figured out how to come with me,” she wrote.

The note instantly put a smile on McKee’s face and allowed her to enjoy the trip knowing that her mother was close to her heart.
