The Last Kingdom season five will be the final part of the Netflix historical drama and viewers were sad to hear it would be ending so soon. The Anglo-Saxon series will continue in the form of a feature-length film, titled Seven Kings Must Die, which will start production in 2022. Fans are starting to wonder whether the release of the final season has been delayed until next year.
Has The Last Kingdom season 5 been delayed until 2022?
Earlier this year Uhtred of Bebbanburg star Alexander Dreymon announced the upcoming season will be the show’s last.
The series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, and at the time it was first adapted for TV, only 10 books had been released.
Season five has taken inspiration from books nine and 10, and Dreymon explained this is why the show was ending after the fifth outing.
Hopefully, the remaining three books will be covered in the feature-length film, starring Dreymon.
As for when season five of The Last Kingdom will air, it is not looking likely for December 2021.
Previous seasons have aired in November, but the fourth season made its debut in April 2020.
With this in mind, fans had hoped the final instalment would air in November, but it was not the case.
Christmas is drawing ever closer, which means a December release date may not be on the cards.
If the series is to air this side of 2021, Netflix would have to announce the release date in the coming days.
No word has been said as to whether the final season will air before the year is out.
Some TV listings sites have indicated the series will not air in December, much to the disappointment of fans.
The whatsonnetflix.com listings page has not included the historical drama on its TV schedule yet.
Geektown.co.uk has pencilled in the series for winter 2021/2022, saying no exact time has been given.
There is a chance fans will have to wait until January or beyond for the new episodes.
Filming for season five wrapped in June 2021, but there is an extensive post-production process.
With the iconic battle scenes expected to be even more brutal than before, a lot of work will need to go into post-production.
This could explain why the final season has taken so long to come to light as the creators want the series to go out with a bang.
Dreymon is on Instagram and his latest post, from November 10, was of himself with his on-screen daughter, Ruby Hartley.
The young actress plays Stiorra and she celebrated her birthday with the Uhtred star.
He said: “@rubyhartley_ ‘s birthday is the most difficult day of the year. But I got through it without being mean to her.
“Can’t wait for midnight. Happy Birthday to my talented and gorgeous on-screen daughter.”
The official Instagram page for the series has been sharing updates and introducing new characters to the final season.
Domnal was the latest character to feature and he was quoted as saying: “I still think it is unwise to trust a man who betrays his king.”
Fans took to the comments to beg for a release date, with one saying: “When are you people going to give us 5.”
Another said: “Waiting on season 5 but getting a bit impatient.”
The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
