TOWIE’s Joey Turner savagely trolled by grandmas after joining show aged 17

TOWIE newcomer Joey Turner made waves when he joined the cast earlier this year, along with a fresh batch of newcomers.

At just 17 years old, the Essex native was the youngest ever cast member to join the show, making TOWIE history.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Online, Joey opened up becoming a reality star before his 18th birthday – and the backlash from cruel online trolls.

When Joey took sides in spats with his TOWIE co-stars Ella Rae Wise and Chloe Brockett on the show, the Twitter trolls came out hard and fast.

He said: "I always get people saying nasty things about me on Twitter. It really is one of those things depending on your mood. If I'm in a bad mood that day and I see a tweet about me I can't take it with a pinch of salt – it gets to me.

"It's very hit or miss, they can say something that you're very insecure about. I try and tell myself that I don't care about stuff, even though I really do."

He added: "Deep down, even though I put up this front and say that I don't care, I do."

The teenager, who boasts a whopping 24,600 Instagram followers, said he was shocked when he discovered the culprits – grandmas and mums.

He explained: "There was some people that my nan knew that was saying things about me, and I was really shocked by that. How is that a middle-aged woman who has kids and grandkids herself can sit through a screen and say this private stuff about me?

"I've noticed, you'd expect it to be 17, 18-year-olds that are my own age but it never is. How can you sit and attack me through a screen when you have kids your self? How would you feel if someone was doing this to your kids?"

Luckily, Joey said that ITV has been on-hand to offer support throughout the experience, making the cast's mental health their top priority.

He said: "Nothing mentally could have prepared me for what was going to come.

"But we're very lucky because we have a really big support system. We have our own psych, so if we're ever feeling down or feeling conflicted we can tell them how we're feeling.

"I don't call him all the time, but it's nice to know that when I need him, he's there. It's so reassuring."

Despite the trolling, the stylish TOWIE star has zero regrets about joining the show at such a young age.

He said: "I was making all these mistakes, the same mistakes that everyone else was making when they were 17 except that I'm just doing them on TV.

"When you look at it, in a nice way, everyone gets to see your growth.

"I'm so glad I did it the way that I did it when I was 17. I think it sounds so much cooler, like 'Lindsay Lohan, child star'!"

The TOWIE Christmas Special is due to air later this month.
