Vikings season 6: Will Hvitserk be killed amid Lagertha’s murder?

Episode six of the sixth series of Vikings aired on January 8 and left fans of the show heartbroken after Hvitserk (played by Marco Ilsø) mistakenly took Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) for an evil serpent and killed her. In a state of delirium he suffers another hallucination and, while Lagertha drags herself towards the great hall, he stabs her to death. In the final few minutes of the episode he comes to realise the mistake he has made as Lagertha dies in his arms.

As the rain falls heavily around them both he flees the scene of the crime, leaving Lagertha alone on the ground.

Lagertha’s death may have been foreseen after her new village was raided by bandits and she faced the wrath of White Hair (Kieran O’Reilly).

Hvitserk’s fate has taken a number of turns throughout the series as his family, including brother Ubbe (Patrick Smith), has shown sympathy for his poor mental state.

But throughout the episodes it becomes clear Ubbe is becoming tired of his brother’s actions and washes his hands of him.

Ubbe had given Hvitserk the responsibility of leading a trading party to the Silk Road. But his sibling’s poor condition makes him miss the boat, causing Ubbe to disown him.

Lagertha reminds Hvitserk of this as she dies in his arms.

There are many reasons why Hvitserk would feel he deserved to be punished for his recklessness.

Following the death of his love Thora (Eve Connolly) at the hands of his brother Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen), PTSD had taken over.

To help ease the pain he turned to drink and magic mushrooms, causing him to make such irrational moves.
