Unforgotten has been keeping ITV viewers hooked for the past few years with actress Nicola Walker at the reigns. She, alongside actor Sanjeev Bhaskar who plays DI Sunil “Sunny” Khan, have been cracking a series of cold cases from historic disappearances to disturbing murders, but no one was expecting what happened in the season four finale.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Unforgotten.

The penultimate episode of Unforgotten series four ended with Cassie’s life in jeopardy after being involved in a car accident.

In the finale, she was rushed off to hospital and taken in for emergency surgery, surrounded by her loved ones and Sunny.

The doctors said they believed she was going to be alright as it didn’t look like her injuries were going to have a long-term effect on her.

However, after Sunny returned from solving the Matthew Walsh murder investigation, he found out this wasn’t the case.

When Sunny arrived back at the hospital, he was told her brain injuries were far worse than originally suspected and that she wouldn’t ever wake up.

He was only able to whimper a heartbroken “No”, as he saw her partner John (Alastair Mackenzie) sitting outside her hospital room, devastated.

Cassie’s dad Martin (Peter Egan) was outside in the hospital car park, sobbing as he listened to the voicemail she left him after they had argued.

The final scene showed Sunny laying flowers by her grave which had “Mother, daughter, Copper”, engraved on it.

Why did Nicola Walker leave Unforgotten?

As of yet, there is no clear indication as to why actress Walker left Unforgotten.

She isn’t on any public social media so hasn’t made any statements regarding Cassie’s exit.

Taking to Twitter to pay tribute to her time on the show, creator Chris Lang said: “It has been an uncomplicated joy making 4 seasons of #Unforgotten with #NicolaWalker.

“‘We can be sad that we’ve lost someone we adored & who we will miss every day, but we are also grateful for the time we did have together'”.

It hasn’t been confirmed that this is the reason behind her exit, but actress Walker is now filming for a new drama.

She is going to be playing the titular character of Annika, who is a Marine Homicide Unit detective, in a show which will air on Alibi.

Based on a BBC Radio 4 drama, Annika is about the detective investigating a number of mysterious deaths and unexplained murders off the coast of Scotland.

Walker voiced Annika in the radio adaptation of the series.

Filming for the drama is currently taking place and is expected to premiere sometime later this year.

As the finale approached, there were concerns that Cassie had been murdered with the car accident being a setup.

However, it was later proved this wasn’t the case as it was just a car thief who had crashed into her.

She pulled out in front of him as she was distracted, checking for messages from her dad to see if he had replied to her voicemail.

Unforgotten is available to watch on ITV Hub.
