This Is Us is coming to an end with the release of season six on NBC. The long-running show has been an emotional journey as it has jumped back and forth through the life of the Pearson family. There have been many twists and turns along the way, but fans’ questions will finally be answered when the sixth season comes to a close.

Why is This Is Us ending after season 6?

It was always hard to predict when This is Us could end due to this show moving around time so much.

Sadly, the end is here, with the showrunners confirming that season six would be the final chapter in the Pearson family saga.

News broke that season six would be the last in early 2021, following the release of the fifth season.

When the show first premiered on NBC, it was an immediate success, going on to be one of the broadcaster’s most-watched shows, snapping up multiple awards in the process.

NBC was clearly happy with the success, as seasons four, five, and six were all confirmed following the release of season three.

Production delays caused by the ongoing pandemic led to seasons five and six being pushed back numerous times, stretching out an already agonising wait for the end.

It appears that the show has simply come to a natural end, with the showrunners always intending to wrap up the story after six seasons.

This was even teased following the release of season three back in 2018, with showrunner Dan Fogelman hinting the finale way back then in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Fogelman explained: “I think we’re roughly in the middle of where the television series is going to go.

“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, and so we have a very direct plan.

“But yeah, I think where you find the characters right now, you’re in the middle of their story.

“If you were in the movie theatre, you’d be at the moment where you’re about an hour into the movie wondering what’s going to happen.”

Due to the constantly shifting timeline of the show, it seems the writers had an endgame planned from the beginning.

While there have been countless twists thrown in to surprise fans, it seems clear where the Pearsons would eventually find themselves.

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Frances Berwick, chairman of entertainment networks at NBCU Television and Streaming added that it was the right time to end the series.

“We know saying goodbye to the Pearsons will be hard enough, and we wanted to give fans as close to an uninterrupted run as we can,” Berwick said.

Fogelman also weighed in on fans’ hopes for a spin-off or a continuation of some kind in the future, throwing cold water on the idea in the process.

He admitted that a spin-off was not a top priority in his mind and a conversation regarding one had not come up between himself and NBC.

Fogelman’s next move has not been confirmed, though the writer is attached to an upcoming film titled Honeymoon with Harry.

Considering the show’s meteoric success, there is always the chance NBC may choose to continue it at some point down the road, but for now, season six is the final farewell fans have been preparing themselves for.

This is Us season six premieres on January 4 at 9pm on NBC in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
