The Good Doctor is one of the most popular shows on ABC, with the first four seasons quickly building up a loyal fanbase. After the last season, fans have been patiently awaiting for Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) to return. But will there be another season of the show?

Will there be another series of The Good Doctor?

The Good Doctor hasn’t been off screens long but fans are already turning their attention to season five.

The last time the medical drama was on ABC was on June 7, before the wait for the fifth season began.

There is reason to be happy though, as ABC confirmed the renewal of the show back on May 3, way ahead of the season four finale.

ABC is clearly confident about the show – and with good reason as it continues to be a massive hit with viewers.

It has captured viewers’ attention with the story of Dr Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome who is recruited to join a prestigious hospital.

Across the first four seasons, fans have got to see Shaun grow and change, adapting to the demanding life as a young doctor.

The wait for the fifth season won’t be long as the show is set to return on Monday, September 27 at 10pm EST.

This will likely bring the finale of season five well into 2022, with a March ending likely for the upcoming season.

All the main players are returning for the show, including Shaun Murphy, Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara), Dr Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann), and Dr Alex Park (Will Yun Lee).

Rounding out the main team is Dr Audrey Lim (Christina Chang), Dr Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper), and Dr Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff).

There will also be some promotions for the team, as some guest stars are now joining the show as series regulars.

Noah Galvin as Dr Asher Wolke, Bria Samone Henderson as Dr Jordan Allen and Osvaldo Benavides as Dr Mateo Rendom Osma are all now fulltime cast members.

However, there is one major change coming to the cast in season five, as Antonia Thomas has announced she is leaving the series as Dr Claire Browne.

Speaking to Deadline, Browne explained: “Leaving is a bittersweet thing for me because the last four years have been absolutely incredible.

“It has not been an easy decision for me to leave, so I absolutely would love to come back every now and then and say hi… I’m very much looking forward to that.”

This leaves the door open for Browne to make some cameo appearances in the future, something fans will be happy to see.

Fans are desperate to jump back into the show, with many of them eagerly counting down the days until the season five premiere.

On Twitter, one fan said: “I am so excited for The Good Doctor Season 5 maaaaaannnnn!!” (sic)

Another added: “At least September 27 The Good Doctor Season 5 drops!”

The Good Doctor will return for season five on September 27 on ABC.
