Dame Joan Collins is not a fan of AI or robots as she worries they’re ‘close to taking us over’.
The legendary actress, 90, has been a staple on our screens for decades, but isn’t a fan of the way technology is going.
Chatting to Roman Kemp and Alex Jones on The One Show on Friday, she revealed her fears about robotics and even the likes of Amazon’s Alexa.
The conversation came after the programme showcased incredible AI and robotics at the Milton Keynes Robotics Competition – but it’s safe to say Dame Joan was less than impressed.
Alex jokingly asked Dame Joan if she could ever see a robot replacing her fifth husband, Percy Gibson, who she has been married to for over two decades.
To which Dame Joan answered witheringly: ‘Are you kidding? He’s irreplaceable.’
She went on: ‘I don’t like the idea of robots. I really don’t. I don’t even like the idea of “Alexa, put on my telephone,” or whatever.
‘I just think they are too close to taking us over, I don’t like that idea.’
The star also reflected on the ‘olden days’ of Hollywood, recalling seeing Fred Astaire casually window shopping on the street.
She said it was impossible for stars to do the same these days as they’re ‘too frightened to go out’ for many reasons – from people mobbing them to asking for selfies on their phones.
Dame Joan isn’t the only one worried about the rapid developments in robotics and AI, as megastar Ed Sheeran recently admitted he’s terrified of AI taking over, asking: ‘Have you not seen the movies where they kill us all?’
The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
