IPSO ruling upheld against MailOnline following accuracy complaint from Martin Clunes

In an article headlined ‘EXCLUSIVE Martin Clunes says it would be a “terrible shame” if view from his hilltop Dorset manor house is “spoilt” by traveller site – after his new-age hippie neighbours won latest stage of planning war against actor’, published on 12 April 2023 and an article headlined ‘Doc Martin star Martin Clunes launches last-ditch bid to stop new-age hippie neighbours building traveller site next to his hilltop Dorset manor house… by claiming the couple are NOT nomads’, published on 18 April, we reported that Martin Clunes said it would be a ‘terrible shame’ if the view from his home was ‘spoilt’ by a neighbour’s planning application. Mr Clunes denies that he ever said this, and says that he cannot see the proposed development from his home – therefore, he would not have said that his view would be ‘spoilt’ by it. A note of the conversation between the journalist and Mr Clunes was not taken until ten minutes after the pair had spoken and IPSO found, on the balance of probabilities, that the quote attributed to Mr Clunes was inaccurate and did not reflect the position which he had expressed during the conversation. This correction has been published following an upheld ruling by the Independent Press Standards Organisation.
