Alison Hammond says Bake Offs happy and safe after This Morning drama

The Great British Bake Off’s latest addition Alison Hammond has opened up on joining the much-loved baking competition at a time when This Morning fell under intense scrutiny.
In May this year, Phillip Schofield announced that he was leaving the award-winning daytime show after more than 20 years as a presenter.
Just a week later he resigned completely from ITV after admitting to an affair with a younger male employee.
This put a media spotlight on the show and executives from ITV were even questioned by MPs. Alison acknowledges that working on Bake Off is a very different experience to that period.
“It’s like being on holiday: it’s wonderful, free, and you feel safe,” she says.

“You don’t have to think politically about anything. It’s just a happy and safe show,” she told this week’s Radio Times.
At the time of the scandal Alison was the regular Friday presenter on this Morning with Dermot O’Leary.
However, since Phillip’s departure she has become one of the revolving presenters co-hosting with Holly Willoughby on a regular basis and will work on Bake Off alongside her duties on This Morning.
Alison has previously appeared on Bake Off on the other side of the table as a contestant on The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer back in 2020.
She proved to have prowess with a wooden spoon as her brownies wowed judge Prue Leith, who she will now be working alongside.

Interestingly she revealed that she hadn’t even considered the job until fans on social media started calling out for her to take it.
“The first time I even thought about the job was when Matt Lucas left and Twitter went berserk about me taking his role,” the 48-year-old mum of one said.
Channel 4 recently shared a first look at Alison on the show in a teaser trailer for the upcoming series. The short clip follows eggs, with smiley faces drawn on them, making their way into the famous Bake Off tent before they are whisked up and turned into an appealing dessert with flour, butter and chocolate.
Alongside the eggs are grinning raspberries which are placed on top of a delicious cake before Alison and her co-stars tuck into the sweet treat.
The Great British Bake Off will return on Channel 4 on Tuesday, September 26 at 8pm. You can read Alison’s full interview in this week’s Radio Times.
