Coronation Street made history during the latest instalment as the soap aired its first ever gay wedding.
On Monday (October 2), Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) exchanged vows in emotional scenes. The couple got engaged a few months ago, wanting to live life to the full following Paul's motor neurone disease diagnosis.
The episode opened with Paul's twin sister Gemma and mum Bernie helping him to prepare for his wedding, before he headed to the ceremony at the Bistro. The two men declared their love for each other in front of their family and friends, with the registrar pronouncing them husband and husband.

After the ceremony ended, Billy was shocked to discover that Paul had been hiding something from him. Revealing that the day is far from over, Paul surprised his new husband with keys, explaining he found a vicar who agreed to marry them "on the sly" in a church.
Billy was clearly stunned by the offer, but after deliberating, the newlyweds headed to the church to marry before god. The couple sent their vows once again, tearfully saying the words "until death do us part" as their tragic ending looms.
Back at the Bistro, Billy and Paul had their first dance. "Thank you for the perfect day," Billy said as he looked into Paul's eyes.
"I wish there could be loads more perfect days," Paul confessed to his husband. Billy responded: "But I would rather have one day with you than a lifetime with anyone else." The couple shared a kiss in the emotional scene as their friends and family danced around them.
Last month, Paul was left devastated when he discovered pal Shelly had passed away following a battle with MND. Speaking on her passing, Peter explained: “Her death had a really big, big effect on him because through Shelley he found someone who totally understands his situation.

"As much as Billy, Bernie and Gemma love and care for Paul so much, the still would never understand what it’s like to live with MND. Meeting Shelly and getting on so well, I think Paul felt like he could tell her anything, so losing Shelly is a big shock for Paul and also it’s Paul’s future.
"Shelley’s just Paul a bit further down the MND journey. So I think it was a bit of a wake up call for him I guess to make him make the most of what time he’s got left.”
