Michael Ball recalls moment Sir Roger Moore lost his nerve

Michael Ball on Sir Roger Moore ‘losing his nerve’

Michael Ball appeared on The One Show this week to discuss his latest book, Different Aspects: A Memoir and he opened up about why he had chosen to revisit the musical Aspects of Love.

Sitting down with hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp, the singer, actor and presenter also spoke about the late Sir Roger Moore and his connection to the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Michael revealed: “He’d never done a musical and he lost his nerve.”

Moore famously withdrew from the role a few weeks before the show was set to open in London’s West End.

At the time he explained that he “was having nightmares of the worst possible kind over this show”.

He also revealed that once he was “in the theatre with an orchestra,” he knew it would be “impossible to continue.” His understudy Kevin Colson ultimately took over the role.

The James Bond star was set to play the aristocrat George Dillingham, the older man involved in a relationship with a French actress and her young English lover, in the musical. Michael was also part of the original production and it was there that the two met.

Michael admits that Sir Roger “would have been utterly magnificent” adding that he was the reason why he wanted to return to Aspects of Love again on the West End.

He continued: “I’d just finished Hairspray and I’m sitting and I’m watching the telly and Moonraker came on and I was thinking about Roge.”

The pair had stayed in touch over the years and Michael had shared a touching tribute to Moore following his death in 2017. The musical performer spoke of how “generous, funny, beautiful and kind” the man whom he referred to as his “dearest uncle” had been.

Michael admitted on The One Show: “I realised I was pretty much the age that he was when we started doing that. And that made me think about Aspects and wouldn’t it be interesting to visit again.”

Michael rejoined the revival last year and has now played the very character that Moore passed on all those years ago.

The One Show airs weeknights at 7pm on BBC One.
