Davina McCall, 55, admits drugs filled ‘a hole in her heart’ as she gets candid about addiction, grief, and her split from ex-husband Matthew Robertson
Davina McCall has admitted drugs filled ‘a hole in her heart,’ from being abandoned by her late mum Florence Kock, in a new wide-ranging interview.
The TV presenter, 55, spoke candidly about addiction, and explained how after getting clean aged 25 and becoming teetotal, she turned to therapy for her healing.
Davina also opened up about grief, after her sister Caroline died from lung cancer 11 years ago, her grandmother Pippy passed away five years ago, and her father died last year from Alzheimer’s.
In the same interview, the media personality delved into the ‘breakdown’ of her marriage and subsequent split from her ex-husband Matthew Robertson in 2017.
Davina also branded her boyfriend Michael Douglas ‘the icing on her life’ after their friendship of 20 years developed into a romance.

In a lengthy interview with The Times, Davina discussed her well-documented addiction, saying: ‘I had a hole here [she puts her hands on her heart] and drugs filled that.
‘And eventually I’ve kind of put sticky tape over each f***king hole, and probably each therapy session I go to is like another bit of tape.
‘Now I feel like it’s healed but I am still vigilant. I don’t ever want to drink again, that’s for sure. I love not drinking.’
Touching on grief, Davina admitted that in June, when she was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting, she cried, because: ‘the three people who would be the most excited about it have all gone.’
The former Big Brother host spoke openly about her divorce from Matthew, who she married in 2000 and with whom she shares her three children – two daughters and a son.
Davina told the publication: ‘In the end, we were living completely separate lives. We were hardly talking. It wasn’t arguing. We never argued. We just lived separate lives. And we weren’t happy.’
She explained how her sister’s death in 2012 made her reevaluate her own life and helped her to realise that she simply wanted to be happy, but she and Matthew were essentially ‘living separate lives’.
Davina recalled: ‘I thought, ”I just want to be happy, and this is really sad. We’re in a marriage and we’re in it for the kids. We love our kids, but we’re just not happy.” And I thought, ”Is that really selfish?” because my parents divorced and I thought that was so selfish.’
Loved up: Davina also branded her boyfriend Michael Douglas ‘the icing on her life’ after their friendship of 20 years developed into a romance
After intensive therapy to unpick her feelings, she finally concluded: ‘We loved each other. But sometimes that isn’t enough.’
Davina is now in a loving relationship with her longtime hairdresser, fellow divorcee Michael Douglas, who has two children of his own.
The couple began dating after her divorce was finalised from her ex-husband Matthew Robertson in April 2018.
She gushed: ‘Michael is like the icing on my life, but my life is good. Not because of my career or material things, but because I’ve got to a place where I feel good.’
