Annapurna Interactive’s 'Stray' Video Game Is Receiving a Movie Adaptation

Annapurna Interactive’s hit 2022 game Stray is receiving a movie adaptation from the studio’s animation company, Annapurna Animation.

The news was confirmed by Annapurna Animation’s Robert Baird who shared in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, “This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this movie. I think it’s one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat.”

The adaptation’s style will follow a “hopepunk” aesthetic, which Variety describes as one that highlights “kindness and optimism as rebellious weapons.” Baird added, “I love that term, hopepunk. I think, if we are going to do this adaptation justice, this is going to be the first and greatest hopepunk movie that’s ever been made.”

Nick Bruno is set to direct the adaptation.

Stray was released in 2022 by BlueTwelve Studio and follows the story of a stray cat who gets lost in a futuristic city. The cat, aided by a drone named B-12, must navigate its way around the city to get back to the surface while fighting off robots and bacteria. It went on to win Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game at the 2022 Game Awards.

Elsewhere in entertainment, Aaron Paul revealed that Netflix does not pay him residuals for Breaking Bad.
