Zac Efron 'crushed' as TV show is axed after just two episodes

The latest season of Zac Efron’s travel show has been cancelled after just two episodes.

First premiering back in 2020, Down to Earth with Zac Efron first aired on Netflix, and followed the actor as he travelled around the world.

Visiting locations like France, Puerto Rico, Iceland and Peru, he met with those working on and practising sustainable living projects, and lived in an eco-village, learnt about potato cryopreservation and discovered more about London’s pollution-reduction efforts.

The second season saw him explore similar themes in Australia, where he was based throughout the pandemic.

While the series was then picked up by The CW, it’s now been cut after only two episodes have gone to air, with poor viewer numbers being singled out as the reason for the decision.

After the second episode attracted only 232,000 viewers –  the second lowest ever recorded by the network –  it was taken off air.

It came after a 24 per cent drop in viewers from the first episode to the second.

‘To find out so few people were interested was crushing,’ a source has since told the National Enquirer.

They also shared how the actor and presenter, 35, was feeling.

‘He’s taking it really hard. That is the biggest blow about getting cancelled – Zac enjoys travelling,’ they added.

In 2021 Zac won the first Emmy of his career for the show, taking home the award for Outstanding Daytime Program Host for his role on the series.

Soon after the actor, who is best known for his career-making role as Troy Bolton in the High School Musical series wrote on social media: ‘Wow! Never expected this and so grateful. A HUGE thank you to @DaytimeEmmys @netflix and our small but powerful crew, #downtoearth who made this show what it is. And most of all, thank all of you for watching and enjoying D2E. This is for you.’

However last year the show found itself in hot water after being sued by a health brand that shared the same name.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, Down to Earth Organics claimed they already had the rights to the name for media and entertainment before Zac’s show premiered, and also claimed that the similar names had been causing confusion with their customer base.

According to the lawsuit obtained the brand said the Netflix series’ advice on wellness ‘has been widely ridiculed’ and they were requesting damages from Zac and Netflix, and also seeking a prohibition on both the actor and the streaming giant using the Down To Earth trademark.

There has not been any update on the case in the year since it was filed.

Remaining episodes of Down to Earth will be available on the CW app.

Metro.co.uk has contacted The CW and representatives for Zac Efron for comment.

The first two seasons of Down to Earth with Zac Efron are streaming on Netflix.
