What’s on TV Wednesday: A Democratic Debate and ‘Hamlet’

What’s on TV

2020 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES DEBATE 9 p.m. on MSNBC, NBC and Telemundo. Maybe they’ll blow off steam with a game of baseball afterward. After all, each night of the first presidential debates of the 2020 Democratic primary race carry nine candidates, enough to fill a team. The highest-polling candidate appearing Wednesday, the first night, is Senator Elizabeth Warren. Her opponents in the debate, held in Miami, will include Senators Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Cory Booker of New Jersey; former Representative Beto O’Rourke of Texas; and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York. The second debate will air Thursday, also at 9 p.m., on the same networks. It has perhaps the more starry showdown, with a pool that includes former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.; Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Kamala Harris of California; and Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind. Three female candidates will appear each night, more than have ever before been on the debate stage at once (the third on Wednesday is Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii).

TRUE JUSTICE: BRYAN STEVENSON’S FIGHT FOR EQUALITY (2019) 8 p.m. on HBO. The human rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson is known for representing death-row inmates, and for his recent work in bringing both a national monument to victims of lynching and an accompanying museum of slavery and mass incarceration to Montgomery, Ala. Stevenson’s work to eliminate racial discrimination from the criminal justice system is the subject of this documentary, which profiles him and his career. “When you look at the 13th Amendment, which talks about ending forced labor, it says nothing about ending this narrative of racial differences,” Stevenson said in an interview with The New York Times Magazine this year. “Slavery didn’t end in 1865; it just evolved.”

What’s Streaming

HAMLET Rent on Globe Player. Michelle Terry plays Hamlet in this production of the great tragedy, which ran at Shakespeare’s Globe in London last year and makes the dramatic pursuit of power you’ll see at the presidential debates this week look cordial. You couldn’t ask for a more qualified candidate to play the avenging Danish prince than Terry, a veteran Shakespearean actress and the current artistic director of the Globe. “It’s difficult to imagine a sparkier, more deeply felt Hamlet than she is here,” Matt Wolf wrote in The Times, “her withdrawn, black-clad presence at the start giving way to a jaunty, clownish demeanor that never for a second loses sight of the grieving character’s ‘noble heart.’” “Ophelia,” a riff on Shakespeare with Daisy Ridley that hits movie theaters on Friday, makes this an especially good time for a refresher.

BEATS (2019) Stream on Netflix. A talented teenage producer (Khalil Everage) makes music with a high school security guard played by the “black-ish” star Anthony Anderson in this drama set on Chicago’s South Side. It’s a coming-of-age story with wisdom.

‘I’m sad I’m a drug taker’: Bomber Thompson reveals ice habit

Fallen AFL great Mark 'Bomber' Thompson has admitted he was an ice user and spent 12 hours a day trading cryptocurrency after leaving the game in the wake of Essendon's drugs scandal that left him in a "bad way".

The premiership coach is in Melbourne Magistrates Court fighting three drug trafficking charges and four of possession after drugs were allegedly found in his Port Melbourne home during police raids in January 2018.

The 55-year-old told the court on Wednesday that as he struggled with leaving the football world he locked himself in his Port Melbourne home, trading in cryptocurrency 12 hours a day, and using drugs when a man came knocking on his door.

He invited the man in, now known as Geelong man Thomas Windsor, and they formed a friendship. Within weeks they were living together in the converted warehouse.

While he admitted taking drugs, he insisted he has not sold them, adding that he was also tempted to try LSD but "didn't have the guts".

"Ice, that's it really," he said.

Mr Thompson told the court that he still struggles dealing with the Essendon supplements scandal which left him in a "bad way".

"I took a lot of kids on from their parents and I looked them in the eye and said, 'Don’t worry your son's going to be OK'. That went out the door and I really couldn’t live with that," he said.

"The fact I’m responsible for these boys found guilty for cheating for something I really love.

"I hate the game, I left the game after working at Essendon for two years.

"Here I am in 2017 at home. I found cryptocurrency, your Honor. It’s something I’d been looking for in my life."

Mr Thompson revealed that smoking ice became a "habit" for him and that his use of it increased towards the end of 2017, until his house was raided on January 5 the following year.

He admitted that scales found by police in his house belonged to him.

"I used to weigh stuff up. What you paid for is what you got," he said.

He then shook his head and said: "I can’t believe I’m saying this."

"I never had any intention to sell any drugs. I know right from wrong, being a trafficker is just embarrassing for me.

"I’m a drug taker, I’m sad I’m a drug taker. I took them back then to mask all the pain."

I can’t believe I’m saying this … I’m a drug taker, I’m sad I’m a drug taker.

Mr Thompson also admitted he had considered taking LSD.

"I always wanted to take it but I didn't have the guts," he said.

Police allege they found a myriad of illicit substances and drug paraphernalia in various areas of Mr Thompson's apartment.

Substances allegedly found in Mr Thompson’s bedroom area included 134.6 grams of MDMA, 5½ Xanax tablets and methamphetamine, as well as two sets of digital scales, eight hard drives, four ice pipes and a shoe box filled with clear resealable bags.

In a magnetic box in a shared mezzanine area were eight clear bags containing 33.1 grams of crystal meth, 5.6 grams of Ephedrine, one LSD tab and three white capsules.

The court previously heard that a further 839.7 grams of what was believed to be MDMA was contaminated by the clandestine drug unit so DNA could not be found.

The premiership coach has been on bail since his arrest while facing eight charges including trafficking ecstasy and ice and breaching bail.

Mr Thompson played more than 200 games of AFL football before coaching Geelong to two premierships. He later worked in the coaching team at Essendon football club.

The ongoing hearing is expected to hear from a DNA expert later on Wednesday.

More to come.

Mindy Kaling Celebrates Her Birthday with B.J. Novak — and Fans Go Nuts Over How He Looks at Her!

If there was ever a time that fans were pressing for Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak to get back together, it was last night.

While celebrating her 40th birthday on Monday, Kaling was joined by some of her closest friends, including ex-boyfriend Novak, 39, for a cocktail party at San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood.

Because it was a milestone birthday, Kaling was treated to a fancy cake that hilariously featured a photo of herself, which appeared to be taken at the same exact moment from one of her past birthdays.

To mimic the shot on her cake, Kaling held her thumbs up alongside the elaborately decorated treat and smiled for the camera — but even though she sparkled and shined on her big day, it was Novak who completely stole the shot, which was shared to his Instagram.

Off to Kaling’s left side sat her ex-boyfriend, who was captured adoringly staring at the birthday girl as she posed for the camera.

Of course, fans were quick to pick up on the sweet gesture and get their hopes up that Kaling and Novak, who played onscreen lovers in The Office and dated on-and-off in real life back in the day, would one day reignite their flame.

“Get u a man that looks at u the same way bj looks at mindy,” wrote one follower.

“I wish someone looked at me like BJ looks at Mindy,” said someone else.

“The way BJ looks at Mindy 😍😍” noted another fan, while several others chimed in with similar thoughts. Another wrote, “The way you look at her melts my heart 😭”

“Well, if that’s not a look of love!” suggested one user, as someone else shared, “I wish someone would look at me like that 😍”

“Can you guys get married already?” asked another fan.

Some fans even started referencing their characters on the Steve Carell-headlined NBC comedy.

“I knew Ryan always loved you,” said someone else, while another added, “KELLY AND RYAN FOREVER 😭😭😭😭.” Reps for Kaling and Novak did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The Kaling-Novak couple fandom and Office diehards have long been hoping that the pair would one day reunite, especially since they seem closer than ever these days.

This past January, Kaling and Novak attended the Vanity Fair Oscars viewing party together for the second consecutive year.

A few months later, the Late Night star revealed that Novak is godfather to her 17-month-old daughter, Katherine Swati.

“The truth is that B.J. is so much more like family now than a platonic friend. He’s the godfather to my daughter,” Kaling told Good Housekeeping in May.

Their relationship is so close that Novak often comes over just to play with her baby girl. “He comes over like once a week. Sometimes he’ll come over just to hang out with her,” the actress added.

While the duo has not been publicly or romantically linked since their days on The Office, Kaling has previously shared details about their close bond.

“I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell. He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend,” Kaling admitted to InStyle in 2015.

“I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status,” she added.

In 2014, Novak also opened up to PEOPLE about his friendly — and at times romantic — relationship with his former costar.

“Complicated,” he said when asked to describe Kaling in one word. “A really complicated person and a really complicated friendship, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

Man ‘dead for 20 minutes’ brought back to life after being electrocuted

A Michigan man is lucky to be alive after getting electrocuted, especially considering he was dead for 20 minutes before several shocks to his heart jolted him back to life.

“They brought in this perfect young man who had no vital signs,” said Dr. Angel Chudler, an emergency room physician at Beaumont Hospital, according to the hospital’s blog.

“I said to my team, ‘We’re bringing him back.’ And then I said to him, ‘You better come back!’”

And after another jolt from the defibrillator, 20-year-old Michael Truitt came back.

“When he became conscious again, he was like the Hulk, grabbing the railings and shaking the bed with huge strength. It took the entire care team to hold Michael,” Yasmeen Bachir, a clinical nurse who helped care for Truitt, said in the blog post, which also stated that Truitt was “dead for 20 minutes” prior to resuscitation.

Truitt had been working with his stepdad at a home in Livonia when a metal ladder he was carrying touched a live electrical wire. He said he doesn’t remember anything past that, but the homeowner called 911 and started CPR. It took about four minutes for paramedics to arrive and they attempted to revive him with the defibrillator while en route to the hospital, but he never regained a heartbeat in the ambulance.

“In less than five minutes, brain cells start to die from lack of oxygen,” Barbara Smith, the director of trauma services at Beaumont, told the hospital blog.

“Michael’s resuscitation is miraculous. He did not lose any brain function. It’s a testament to the importance of immediate continuous CPR to move oxygenated blood to the brain.”

The only lasting injury Pruitt has from the ordeal is in his toes, where the voltage from the live wire exited his body, the website said.

We Tried it: Tracing a Natural, Sustainable Pet Food to Its Source Out in Alaska's Bering Sea

Animal lovers want what is best for their pet’s well-being and happiness. Recently, this devotion to our furry friends has meant increased focus on what we are feeding our animals and how that food is made.

Purina and their team of veterinarians, food scientists and nutritionists, many being pet parents themselves, understand this protective urge and abide by the belief that every ingredient has a purpose. To support this statement, the pet food company provides a breakdown of everything that goes into their pet food.

Purina Beyond takes this devotion to high-quality ingredients even farther. Started in 2014, Beyond is a line of natural dog and cat foods that is composed of ingredients that are meant to be recognizable and confidence-inducing to the consumer, proteins like Alaskan Cod, Pacific Tuna and Icelandic Arctic Char, all of which are back by Beyond’s 100% Traceability Guarantee. Every package of Beyond pet food from Purina clearly lists all of ingredients, and the country of origin for each of those ingredients can be found on Purina’s website.

In an addition to being transparent about its sources, Beyond also promises that it is corn, wheat and soy free, contains no added colors, flavors or preservatives and has real meat, poultry or fish as the number one ingredient.

This meat, poultry and fish come from sources that have been carefully vetted, often through relationships that takes months to establish, and go through audits every 1 to 3 years once approved.

“Financial audits, responsible sourcing audits, test to make sure materials meet Purina’s specs,” Andy Furmanek, a category procurement buyer at Purina, listed to PEOPLE as a few of the things their suppliers can expect on fairly regular basis.

Plus, the product has to taste good — pass “palatability testing” — to pets adds Furmanek, who helped bring Alaskan Leader Seafood on as a supplier after determining the company was a “quality, reputable, sustainable” source for cod.

Beyond’s Alaskan Cod Recipe cat and dog food, newcomers to the line, can be traced back the middle of the Bering Sea. The food’s number one ingredient, Alaskan cod, is sustainably-caught by the boats of Alaskan Leader Seafood, a Seattle-based seafood company that operates a fleet of fishing vessels in Alaska’s vast Bering Sea.

Of course, it is easy enough to believe all this information at face value, but PEOPLE decided to go even deeper, right to the source, to see how sustainable Beyond really is.

My journey started in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, a small town home to big fishing industries located on Amaknak Island in Unalaska, Alaska. Here, I boarded the Northern Leader, Alaskan Leader Seafood’s largest and newest fishing vessel. The boat’s home port is Kodiak, Alaska, but Captain Shaun Andrews and his crew were kind enough to take a trip south to pick us up.

The 184-foot vessel is often home to 30 fishermen at a time who rotate duties around the boat for fishing trips that can last anywhere from a few weeks to over 60 days. It sounds like the perfect breeding ground for cabin fever and petty drama, but all of the fisherman — who travel from all across the country to work these trips out on the same wild waters as seen on Deadliest Catch — seem to have found a passion-driven harmony that is only to interrupted when it comes time to decide what kind of music should play over the Northern Leader’s sound system.

It’s a passion that find sits source in Captain Andrews, who has been running fishing vessels since he was 21 years old. A long time captain for Alaskan Leader Seafoods, Andrews was asked by the company to help design the Northern Leader when it came time to create Alaskan Leader’s new boat.

The end result was a bright blue beauty dedicated to combing efficient-fishing of high quality Alaskan cod with a low environmental impact. The Northern Leader has a 100 percent electrically operated propulsion system and 100 percent LED lighting, allowing it to significantly cut down on energy expenditures.

It is also a longline fishing vessel, this means the fish are by a long line stringed with individual hooks that is dropped across the Bering sea in yards. While more time consuming than dredging, this method protects the Bering’s sea bed, helps prevent the by-catch and allows the boat to see everything that is coming on board. The Northern Leader throws all the fish, alive, that they don’t need back into the Bering Sea.

For Captain Andrews this is the only way to fish.

“I’ve been every fisher there is. I looked at the long run, it’s the most environmentally safe way to catch fish,” he said of longline. “You don’t dredge up the bottom. Doing this makes you feel a lot better.”

Andrews has staffed the Northern Leader with people who agree with him, fellow fisherman who love their job and the fish that make it possible. No one aboard Alaskan Leader’s crown jewel is looking to make a quick buck at the expense of the Bering Sea.

It’s an attitude and a practice that attracted Purina enough that the company created Beyond’s Alaskan Cod Recipe to be able to highlight the product. It also allowed for Beyond’s Alaskan Cod Recipe to receive an MSC Certification.

“The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a non-profit organization that sets a science-based standard for sustainable fishing. The MSC standard assesses wild-capture fisheries on three principles: sustainable fish stocks (there are enough fish left in the ocean), minimizing environmental impact and effective fisheries management. In 2018, Purina Beyond successfully completed the Marine Stewardship Council’s Chain of Custody Group Certification, a first within the Purina branded product portfolio,” Sara Schaecher, lead communications specialist at Purina, told PEOPLE.

Purina’s work to ensure they are providing sustainable seafood does not stop with this certification. According to Furmanek, the pet food company works with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, a non-profit out of Boston, to keep tabs on all the fisheries that provide product.

“I submit data to SFP, assign risk to the fish we are bringing in based on country of origin, species, how it’s caught, the vessels that caught it, and SFP give us back a score for that fishery, and if one is high risk we try to improve that fishery or prepare to phase out that ingredient or look at a different source,” he said, adding that Purina always looks to “improve circumstances” and fisheries first, instead of just cutting ties.

Along with bringing more business to Alaskan Leader Seafood, which provides wild-caught Alaskan cod products to outlets across the country, Beyond also helped the seafood company get closer to their goal to use as much of what they catch as possible. Currently, when a cod is caught on the Northern Leader and processed on the fishing vessel, over 95% of the fish is processed and used.

Aboard the boat you can watch it all happen, and I did. The process starts with the longline being baited and draped out in tight squiggle across the waters of the Bering Sea. After all the line is out, the North Leader returns to the start of the line and begins drawing it back in. There are two fishermen at the ready at the side of the boat to draw in each fish off the line, removing any by-catch and throwing it back into the ocean as it comes in. What is taken onto the boat is then sent on a conveyor belt to the ship’s processing plant. All the fish are sorted again, ensuring that any by-catch makes it back into the water alive.

Each cod brought on board in weighed by a computer, which sends those numbers to the government to ensure that the Northern Leader and every other fishing vessel stay within their allotted quota for the year. From there, through an assembly line of clean machinery, each cod is processed, heads and guts included, in a whirlwind of activity that takes less than an hour and ends with processed fish being frozen for safe transport.

“We wanted to build a boat where we could pack all our product and nothing would have to go over the side. That’s what we did,” Andrews said. “We started working towards that, finding markets for every part of the fish. Now, we have 98% of everything is packed on board. That’s as environmentally-friendly as you can get.”

While advertising and product promises can seem too good to be true, the claims made by Beyond regarding their Alaskan Cod Recipe are all real. From head to tail, I watched it happen, surrounded by Alaska’s splendor,  and met the people who are making it possible.

Khloe Kardashian Had A Pregnancy Scare Just Weeks Before The Tristan Thompson Cheating Scandal

Khloé Kardashian is strong, independent, and a total bad *ss. This is not new information, but it’s also not to say she hasn’t dealt with her fair share of drama. In fact, while the world may recall the reported cheating scandal that rocked her world just a few short months ago, the latest episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashian revealed the 34-year-old had actually been through a health crisis just weeks prior. In fact, Khloe Kardashian had a pregnancy scare right before the reported cheating scandal took place.

In case you need a refresher, back in February 2019, news broke that Kardashian’s on-again/off-again boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Tristan Thompson, had reportedly cheated on her with Jordyn Woods. Woods, close family friend of the Kardashians and best friend to Kylie Jenner, denied that anything more than an unsolicited kiss happened during an appearance on Red Table Talk a few days later.

So, not only did Kardashian have to deal with the cheating scandal, but she had also just finished dealing with a pregnancy scare right before everything went down. During the latest episode of KUWTK, which aired Sunday, June 23, 2019, Kardashian was convinced she was pregnant because she was feeling nauseous. The fact that she thought she was pregnant might mean she and Thompson were still getting intimate shortly before the reported incident with Woods.

During the episode, she revealed she was relieved when she discovered she wasn’t pregnant, but also still concerned for her health. "I’m happy that I’m not pregnant because I didn’t want to be, but with that being said, now I’m like, ‘Why the f*ck am I nauseous all the time?’" she said in the episode. "I almost wish I was [pregnant], so I could say that’s why I’m nauseous." The cause of Kardashian’s nausea actually had to do with migraines and stress.

At the end of the day, it wasn’t a pleasant situation for Kardashian, and probably made her even more sensitive and vulnerable to the cheating scandal when news of it quite literally broke the internet. (Especially if she and Thompson were still being intimate.)

Additionally, it wasn’t all that long ago when Kardashian went through another reported cheating scandal with Thompson, while she was nine months pregnant. In April 2018, videos and photos surfaced showing Thompson reportedly getting cozy with and kissing multiple women who were definitely not Kardashian. In fact, it all reportedly went down mere days before Kardashian gave birth to True. It was intense, to say the least.

This latest revelation that she thought she could be pregnant with Thompson’s baby right before he reportedly cheated on her with a family friend is not ideal, but fortunately, it appears as though Kardashian has moved on from the hurt and is focusing on living her best life. Speaking exclusively to E! News after the episode aired, she explained that she’s staying positive. "Life is about ups and downs and I don’t think I planned — obviously, I didn’t plan for any of this to happen— but the beauty is that we can survive anything in life and it’s about a strong mindset and a good support system," she said. Amen, Khloé.
