The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies viewers were left “baffled” as the first episode aired on Tuesday, with some asking: “What is this?”
The BBC drama tells the story of Alice Newman (played by Rebekah Staton) and Cheryl Harker (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), and the conman, Dr Rob Chance (Alistair Petrie), that they have in common.
However, it seems the debut episode didn’t go down so well with everyone.
Taking to social media, several viewers admitted they had been left confused by the thriller.
Twitter user @camy_934 wrote: “The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies is absolute s***! What the hell am I watching?”

@kendie penned: “Am I in the minority but I wish the BBC would make a drama that easy to follow and I understand what is going on! First it was Woman in the Wall and now The Following Events are based on a pack of Lies. I pay for this! #thewomaninthewall #thefollowingeventsarebasedonapackoflies.”
“So far not enough jokes for a comedy, not dramatic enough for a drama and not thrilling enough for a thriller. What is this? It seems a little slow. #TheFollowingEventsAreBasedonaPackofLies #PackofLies,” @Gmackematix shared.
@KayEeGee complained: “Gave episode 1 a go. Not going to bother with anymore. Among myriad other things, the lens blur effect is really annoying. #TheFollowingEventsAreBasedonaPackofLies.”

@sherieamore1 added: “Trying to watch “The Following Events Are Based On A Pack Of Lies” as it looked like should be good, but it’s trying so hard to be quirky that it is unwatchable.”
However, some viewers disagreed, with @TheMainstand posting: “I’m enjoying ep 1 of #TheFollowingEventsAreBasedOnAPackOfLies.”
Speaking in March, Alice star Rebekah actress talked about how relatable she felt her character is.
“From the moment I read the script, I connected with Alice’s journey, the feeling of being a woman in her forties who doesn’t feel that she’s shown yet what she’s fully capable of.
“I connected with her vulnerability and when I read about that early relationship with Rob and how it had made Alice feel, I connected to the idea that you hope that person is going to be able to look after you, and in Alice’s case he disappears completely and abandons her with more problems than she had when she met him.”
