Scott Mills talks new challenge with Strictly partner after ‘intense experience

Pointless: Joanne Clifton reveals she may make Strictly return

BBC Radio 2 host Scott Mills is set to reunite with his Strictly Come Dancing partner Joanne Clifton for a whole new challenge as he branches into the world of theatre for the very first time.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Scott, 50, joked: “If anyone knows how to make me look good at dancing, when I’m not, it’s her,” as he discussed his upcoming stint in Jack and the Beanstalk.

The presenter and 40-year-old Joanne performed on the show together back in 2014 before his exit in week five.

Reflecting on their time on the show, he said: “I kind of knew that I would be rubbish at it, but I wanted to do it for the experience and to push myself.

“And, actually, weirdly, I did get better at it.”

Scott’s most memorable routine was when he performed a Samba dressed as a crab to the tune of The Little Mermaid’s Under the Sea.

“That wasn’t a great routine, apparently that was a Samba,” he laughed.

Scott claimed that Joanne “quite quickly realised” that he was “probably not going to be very good” so decided to bring humour to the show with a sparkly crab outfit.

He added: “Is that the one that still gets shown in the Strictly compilations now? Yeah it is. So she did the right thing.

“I loved the whole experience, I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

This year, the BBC presenter’s pal Angela Scanlon is in the running to win the Glitterball trophy with her partner Carlos Gu.

So far in the competition, she has topped the leaderboard and has mostly received good scores and comments from the judges.

Ahead of her debut, she reached out to Scott for some advice, but he admits he was pretty useless at giving tips.

“I wish I could explain the experience to someone else.

“But, it’s hard to explain, once they’re in it [though], I know she is loving it,” he added. “She could win, I think. We love Angela a lot.”

On what surprised him on the show, Scott said he previously didn’t believe other stars when they said they’ll stay in contact after the competition, until he gained some good friendships of his own.

“I didn’t expect everyone to be so lovely. I made new friends from that show,” he revealed.

“I still regularly speak to Joanne, because you have that shared experience and it’s an intense experience.

“Or I’ll see Anton [Du Beke] out and about or Giovanni [Pernice], he was kind of coming into the show a year after me, I still speak to Aljaz [Škorjanec] and Janette [Manrara].

“I have made friends for life on that show.”

Scott will make his pantomime debut alongside The X Factor winner Sam Bailey, A1’s Mark Read and comedian Jarred Christmas this festive season.

The cast will take to the stage in Leicester’s giant family pantomime Jack and The Beanstalk at Demontfort Hall from December 15 to January 7.

On why he signed up, he added: “The reason I did it is because Vernon Kay told me to, he did it for the first time last year and he won an award for best newcomer.

“I do like a challenge, I do like to do something every now and again that pushes me right out of my comfort zone, talking on the radio and playing songs is really easy for me, but this… not easy.”
