David's exit storyline 'revealed' in Emmerdale amid devastating tragedy
Matthew Wolfenden, who has played David Metcalfe in Emmerdale for 17 years, was recently reported to have quit the show.
The actor has been involved in some huge storylines over the years, including a very near miss when he became involved with killer Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) but survived to tell the tale.
There was also a hard-hitting grooming storyline in which his son Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) was groomed by evil Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein), who David was dating at the time.
More recently David’s storylines have often revolved around his money problems as he struggled to keep the shop that bears his name in business through some difficult times. Financial troubles also led to the disintegration of his relationship with Victoria (Isabel Hodgins).
Recent reports suggested that Matthew felt he hadn’t been getting any ‘gritty storylines’ recently and had decided to see what else was out there for him, leading to a decision to leave the show he’s been a part of for almost two decades.
Whether the door will be left open for Matthew to return or whether his character will be killed off remains uncertain, but upcoming episodes suggest that the storyline could well be to do with a terrible incident that involves Jacob.

At a food tasting event at the Hide Jacob is keen to get involved and support Victoria, whose initiative it is. Before he samples the food he checks it doesn’t contain nuts, as he has a serious allergy. Victoria assures him it’s fine and he takes a bite.
Shortly afterwards he collapses as he experiences a severe allergic reaction. A desperate Victoria rushes to his car to try to find his Auto Adrenaline Injector, but she fails to find it.
As Jacob is eventually rushed to hospital David hurries there to be by his son’s side, not knowing if he’s alive or dead.
Meanwhile Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) is furious at Victoria, who confesses to Gabby (Rosie Bentham) that she was responsible for what happened and it was a genuine mistake.
Could this be the massive shock to the system that makes David Metcalfe decide to leave Emmerdale for good?
